Wonderfully restored 13th-century castle in the heart of County Wexford

Wilton Castle is a luxury 13th-century castle hotel and self-catering holiday let, set amidst the rolling hills of County Wexford, just two hours south-west of Dublin.

The castle has four self-contained apartments, each varying in size, individually-styled and furnished, with its own sitting room and fully-equipped kitchen. These can be booked individually or the entire castle can be booked for up to 14 guests.

Situated on the banks of the Boro River, which rises at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains in the heart of County Wexford, Wilton Castle is surrounded by open parkland and quiet wooded countryside. A part of the local landscape since 1247, when the first fortified tower was built on the land, this beautiful castle with its soaring chimney stacks and turreted towers has been restored from a ruin by local farmer Sean Windsor and is now available to rent and stay in once again.

Apartments

The four self-contained suites at Wilton Castle are spacious apartments, individually styled and furnished, each with their own sitting room, fully-equipped kitchens and views of the stunning surroundings.

History

Originally the home of William De Dene, a tower has stood on this land since at least 1247. A number of families, after which each of the castle's suites are named, called Wilton 'home' over the course of the next four hundred years before it fell into the hands of the Alcock family.

After more than two centuries under their watch, Wilton Castle was burnt to the ground by arsonists in 1923 following a number of turbulent years in the Irish Civil War.

An excerpt from The Irish Times, 7 March 1923, reads...
"Wilton Castle, the residence of Captain P.C. Alcock, about three miles from Enniscorthy, was burned by armed men on Monday night. Nothing remains of the beautiful building but smoke-begrimed, roofless walls, broken windows, and a heap of smouldering debris"

Renovations of the castle began in 2003, after more than 80 years left to ruin, and were spearheaded by the current owner, Sean Windsor. More than a decade later, in 2014, the castle opened its doors to the public once more, offering guests the chance to stay at this luxury Irish bed & breakfast venue.
