Originally built in 1389 by Sir Ralph Lumley, the castle was constructed to serve both as a defensive stronghold and the family seat of the Lumley family. Sir Ralph, a distinguished knight and military leader, was granted the land by Richard II, and the castle’s location overlooking the River Wear provided a commanding view of the surrounding area, as well as strategic defence.

Mark, United KingdomIt was a fantastic new year eve party and all the staff were spot on and the food was great. We will be back next year
Rob , United KingdomThe location and the castle itself met all of our hopes. It was our golden anniversary and we had asked for them to provide us with appropriate flowers and champagne which they did and both were excellent. All he staff we had contact with were 10/10 in all aspects and made us feel appreciated as individual guests and they all seemed to know it was our anniversary as well. Only disappointment with the whole visit was that we did not see the Lumley Castle ghost :-)
Brian, United KingdomGreat stay. A big thanks to Andrew on reception for being extremely helpful. Beautiful castle and grounds.
