Château de Mercues is a beautiful 13th-century Medieval château, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the picturesque Lot valley and Cahors vineyards.
Stroll along the château's wide halls to find a small chapel hidden away inside one tower, or down the immense staircases to the underground cellar where wine is aged; a perfect combination of elegance, gastronomy, fine wines, surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Traditionally the summer residence of the Counts and Bishops of Cahors, the château's elevated location means it offers exceptional views from every vantage point.
Bedrooms
The 30 bedrooms range between Classics, with warm decor and marble bathrooms, to the spectacular Icône Suite; many rooms are located in the tower and offer superb views across the valley and vineyards.
Dining
Le Duèze restaurant seats up to 100 in two spacious dining rooms. In summer, dinner is served in the royal courtyard.
The château's refined cuisine has been lauded by national and international guides, in particular, the Michelin Guide 2017, with one star. The menu was designed as a tribute to the traditions of the region, based on saffron, duck, lamb and black truffles.
Château de Mercuès offers the ultimate wine experience, with a majestic underground cellar in the style of a Romano-Byzantine cathedral. The well-equipped cellar has been compared with that of Château Lafitte, which is like a Greek temple.
Leisure
You can visit the château's cellar and wine storehouse. Wine tasting is popular in the area. There is an outdoor swimming pool on site, as well as tennis and cycling. Spa treatments are available during the summer months.
Families
Children are welcome at the château.
Location
The Occitania region dates back to before the creation of France and has beautiful villages, unspoilt countryside and enduring historic castles and monuments.
Located between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, Cahors' rainfall and humidity levels are optimal for the quality of the vines. Malbec is the original grape variety in Cahors, and its marvellous characteristics are used in 70% blends. The vineyards are situated along the Lot River on its meanders and slopes, which serve as a thermal regulator, on the pebbly and gravelly soil.
