On the edge of the historic 3000-acre Broughton Estate, known as ‘The Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales’, sits the imposing Grade I-listed Broughton Hall, which has been home to the same family since the 11th century. Over recent years it has been renovated to the highest degree by Roger Tempest, its current custodian and 32nd Tempest.

The wood-panelled Victorian Oak Room, the quirkiness of the Old Nursery, the elegance of Portico and the regal grandeur of the North Room are sure to guarantee a memorable experience for all.

The hall’s impressive bathrooms are a mix of marble showers and comfortable roll-top baths, each a spacious and uniquely decorated haven.

For larger events, the estate features additional accommodation across its vast grounds comprising over 200 beds in traditional, luxury cottages.

Gardens

The charming 18th-century formal gardens were designed by Andrew Nesfield and are dotted with statues, fountains, parterres and ponds. The gardens are set to the right of the hall and continue round the back where they meet the stunning conservatory, itself abundant with tropical flowers and water features. The gardens are a treasure trove of discovery for Broughton guests.

Avalon is a world-class, state-of-the-art wellbeing centre, available for use to guests of Broughton Hall. Incorporated within the spa are an 18-metre indoor swimming pool and hydrotherapy pool. The thermal suite features an aroma steam-room and a Finnish sauna. Guests can relax together around the fire pit in the pool garden.

The spa also features a gymnasium, treatment suite and exercise studio offering classes such as yoga and pilates. There are fitness and wellbeing activities guests can get involved in within the parkland setting, such as the bootcamp and mindfulness walking.

History

The Broughton Hall Estate has been home to the Tempest family for over 900 years and enjoys a rich history stretching back to 1097. It is believed the Tempests came to England from Normandy during the invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066. According to historians, the Tempests were given land in England during the aftermath of the invasion.

The Tempests are proud to be one of England’s oldest Catholic landed gentry families. Roger Tempest, the current custodian of Broughton Estate, is the 32nd Tempest in an impressive recorded line dating from the 11th century.
