Ritchie Graham was a notorious border reiver. Reivers were clans who lived in the border territories; pragmatic survivors who would turn any circumstance to their advantage.

It was essential to have a strong fortified house for the protection of your family, clan, cattle and possessions; Brackenhill served this purpose for the Graham Clan.

The reiving period is roughly categorised as 1450 - 1610 and the history is a mixture of fact and folk-law.

Adam, United KingdomFantastic stay - amazing location. Brilliant way to bring in the new year with the family.
Private GuestAbsolutely incredible place. I pray I can go again. So thoughtfully appointed. Lovely and warm once you get the hang of the heating…! Perfectly located, straightforward checkin and check out. Amazing hot tub (so honestly, not remotely a problem that the heating didn’t work immediately). Warning the internet is very bad BUT that’s a massive plus because it made me and my guests not use their phones nearly as much as we normally do. So…all negatives turned out to be positives.
Austin, United KingdomGreat location and an amazing castle. Highly recommend.
Barnes, United StatesOur family thoroughly enjoy the experience. Lovely way to spend Christmas together. Local Carlisle tourist sites were wonderful. Beautiful backroads to Hadrian's Wall. Hope our five grands and their spouses will look upon it fondly after we're gone. The unit truly needs a larger refrigerator. We put items in the cars to keep them cold at night (fortunately it was cold outside). The heating in the unit was surprisingly warm for such an old structure. Wish one of the fireplaces could have been used.
