Situated within glorious, lush gardens, outside the small market town of Aberfeldy, the charming Bolfracks sits prettily on the banks of the River Tay. Its hillside grounds cocoon the white-washed, grey-fringed property and look out over the beautiful majestic landscape of the Tay Valley as its flat farmland and rugged forested hills change with the seasons.

Bolfracks boasts a varied history and its charming rooms, infused with personality, seem to epitomise that. Within, elegant interiors are linked through a rich tapestry of colour and pattern that flows gently from room to room, cleverly ensuring each one maintains a distinct and individual character; interesting chapters of the same story.

Making up the modest 40 acreage, the thoughtfully-maintained gardens are a peaceful, colourful oasis of trees, plants and flowers that entice guests to explore - from a walled garden to a wilder woodland garden with a babbling brook to the 1930s’ summerhouse.

The Gardens

The gardens at Bolfracks have no known origin, which adds to the charm and mystique of this varied landscape. Over the years they have undergone significant redesigning and replanting and now boast a vast selection of trees and shrubs amongst some extremely rare and unusual plants.

Leisure

The local area gives way to a range of country walks, outdoor sports and cultural activities. Try a boat tour on Loch Tay, a hike in the Highlands or visit the ancient standing stones and local castle ruins. Outdoor enthusiasts can experience kayaking and canoeing on the river, mountain-biking and hillwalking.

History

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Bolfracks Estate was owned by the Menzies family. It was sold in the late 18th century to become part of the Taymouth Castle Estate. The house itself was built in the Scottish Baronial style and features many period details that have been lovingly preserved. The oldest part of the building is to the south; a two-story, three-bay block.

Private GuestMy husband organised a 3 night stay at Bolfracks House for a big birthday of mine. Now that I have come back down from being on cloud nine, I thought it time to review this wonderful house and gardens. From the moment you arrive, it is clear that this house is something special. Buzzing in at the security gates, you then drive up a long driveway to the house, which is hidden from view by huge rhododendron trees. Slowly, a white gothic style castle dominates the sky line and you're warmly greeted by Amelia, the manager and Luke the groundskeeper - two of the loveliest people, who no request was too much bother for. Entering the double doors of Bolfracks, the standard of renovation undertaken by the current owners, Davide and Ivana, very quickly becomes apparent. It is a masterpiece of antique complimented by modern finishes. Your eyes will continually span as you seek to take everything in. It is breathtakingly stunning, a theme which continues throughout the house. My family and I adored exploring the house - 3 days really wasn't enough to appreciate the space and tranquility of the house and gardens. The gardens in themselves were spectacular, with Luke explaining that they are hope to re-wild some of the land and things will look quite different in the future. Whatever he has planned, we are sure it'll be wonderful. We also managed to use the gardens to the sides of the house to enjoy some organised games; which included axe throwing, velcro football, giant jenga and a bouncy castle - great fun for a range of ages. The possibilities are endless really! We employed a private chef for dinner one evening, alongside butlers who provided a cocktail masterclass - the two businesses worked alongside each other seamlessly and found the house easy to work in. If you are thinking of staying in Scotland, you really should consider Bolfracks, for a taste of luxury with guaranteed privacy and relaxation. We are counting down the days until we can stay once again, it has stolen a piece of our hearts and allowed us to create lifelong memories.
