Augill Castle is a 19th-century castle nestled in the Eden Valley, between the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria’s Lake District, in open country, little changed for centuries. Dedicated to comfort, friendliness and informality, the castle has been the family home of owners Simon and Wendy Bennett for twenty-four years. It provides guests with the experience of a lived-in castle, not a stately home.

Private GuestMy wife and I rented Augill Castle as part of our honeymoon tour through the UK, inviting nerdy friends from all over the world to join us in this stay of 3 days/2 nights and play Dungeons and Dragons with us while sleeping in an actual castle. Mid-August, about 20 of us, honeymoon couple and all, descended upon Augill Castle to dress in character garb, wield pen, paper and dice and spend the time being nerdy together. First of all, our warmest most heart-felt thanks to Wendy, the owner of the castle, and her willingness to meet us above and beyond in all of our requests for accommodation. She was wonderfully easy to communicate with, inquired about and met every dietary restriction, adjusted the bedding in one room to allow for a feather allergy and was very much on the ball when it came to getting back to us in a timely fashion. Sadly, Wendy never came and introduced herself to us directly so that we aren't fully certain if we even got to meet her in person or if all of our interaction was purely done through email. We would have loved to have sung her praises to her directly as well. Upon our arrival, we were met by Jude who immediately took care of all our needs and made sure we were shown the room and the premises plus introduced to the bar. The rooms all were breathtakingly beautiful, many/most of them with canopied fourposter beds and inviting sitting areas. We all felt like royalty during the course of our stay. Any minor little mishaps (such as a toilet seat lose in one room) were immediately taken care of and resolved without much ado. The kitchen and all its staff deserve the highest praise for the fabulous 3- and 4-course meals they cooked up for us, and our guest with coeliacs was SO pleased to be the only one who was served garlic bread the one night — turns out, the rest of the garlic bread had been forgotten to be served which we never even noticed but just to see this smile of pleased contentment on his face would have been absolutely worth going without. Breakfast, cooked to order with a small side buffet of cereal to choose from, was equally as scrumptious as the dinners were. We had complete run of the place, allowed to frequent the bar even after the staff had gone home on an honor system, and using two of the large side-area 'sitting rooms' (library and den) as our game rooms for our pen and paper roleplaying sessions. Staff were always present but never intrusive, always keeping to the background, and we enjoyed walks across the beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding the castle. All in all, the experience was the highlight of our honeymoon travels and was enjoyed by us as well as our international guests who are still gushing about the wonderful time they had at Augill Castle. Thank you for making this experience one to never forget!
