Itinerary

Day 1-2 - Traquair Castle

The first stop of your tour is Traquair Castle; Scotland's oldest inhabited house. This historic gem is located just 30 miles south of Edinburgh.

In August 1566, Mary Queen of Scots visited Traquair House and she brought with her, James, her baby son who was only three months old. Traquair House contains many items relating to the queen, including her bed, rosary, and crucifix and the cradle where she rocked her infant son, later to become James VI of Scotland. In addition, there are 3 documents signed by Mary Queen of Scots, a copy of the warrant of execution, plus an oak armorial commemorating her visit.

Things to do:

  • Traquair House is also a museum and you get free access when staying overnight; here you will find artifacts from Mary Queen of Scots, including her rosary beads and crucifix.
  • Visit Mary Queen of Scots House, just 45 minutes away in Jedburgh, where you will find further artifacts, including her watch and death mask.
  • History tours can be arranged on request!

Day 3-4 - Neidpath Castle

Just a 20-minute drive from Traquair, you arrive at the second stop of your tour, Neidpath Castle. This Medieval stronghold is located on the banks of the River Tweed!

Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Neidpath Castle in August 1563, on her return journey from a three-month tour of southwest Scotland. Today, you will find an antique four-poster, deep roll-top bath and open log fire. There are lots of little treats around the chamber, including a fabulous selection of natural skincare products, fine chocolates crafted by a local award-winning chocolatier, and a complimentary guidebook to the castle.

Things to do:

  • Just one hour away is Edinburgh, where there is so much to see and do in this vibrant city!
  • Visit Edinburgh Castle, where Mary gave birth to King James VI on 19 June 1566.
  • Visit Linlithgow Palace, just one hour away; this was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
