Which Castles Were Used in “The Queen” (2006) Starring Helen Mirren?

Did you know that two of our magnificent castles were featured in the critically acclaimed 2006 film, The Queen, for which Dame Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II?

The historical landmark, Blairquhan Castle and the baronial-style Cluny Castle played key roles in bringing this remarkable story to life on the big screen, offering an authentic backdrop for the film's portrayal of the British royal family during a pivotal moment in history.

Royal castles on screen

Standing in for royalty, both castles were used to portray the grandeur of Queen Elizabeth II’s most beloved private residence in Scotland, Balmoral Castle. Blairquhan Castle, with its stunning interiors, was filmed for several key interior scenes, capturing the essence of royal living.

Meanwhile, Cluny Castle was selected to represent the majestic exterior of Balmoral, with its impressive Scottish baronial architecture, perfectly mimicking the iconic residence. These castles brought the royal retreat to life, offering a cinematic glimpse into the Queen’s cherished Scottish haven.

Sleeping in the royal chamber

Founder and owner of Celtic Castles, Roger, The Castle Man, recently visited the beautiful Blairquhan Castle and was lucky enough to stay in the very room that Dame Helen Mirren stayed in during filming of The Queen.

The Blue Room was renamed ‘The Queen’s Room’ after filming. Decorated in calming, neutral tones and featuring large windows with parkland views, the large four-poster canopy bed sets the scene and complements the antique furniture, damask wallpaper and lavish silken drapes. Roger recalls of his stay...

“This is a beautiful light and airy large bedroom, overlooking the front of the castle and with easy access from the atrium gallery landing. The bathroom, with a roll-top free-standing bath, twin sinks and a large shower, again is a very generous space. Any guest would be impressed by this bedroom - and it also offers a great night's sleep, making getting up for breakfast a struggle!”
