Days 1 & 2

After arriving into a London airport, head to central London for a stay in England’s capital city. There is plenty to see and do in the city but here are just a few ideas of places to visit: The British Museum; Tate Modern Gallery; National Gallery; Natural History Museum; London Eye; Science Museum; Victoria and Albert Museum and Madame Tussaud’s, or maybe catch the changing of the guards!

Day 3

After breakfast, just over a 2-hour drive away is the historic 16th-century Thornbury Castle, where King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn visited. The castle boasts coats of arms, intricate oriel windows, arrow loops and ornate carved ceilings. If you can tear yourself a way from the castle, Thornbury is ideally situated for exploring the West Country. To the south lies the beautiful Georgian city of Bath, with its Roman baths and abbey, the historic attractions of Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and Stonehenge. To the west lie the ruins of Mediaeval Tintern Abbey, set in the lovely wooded Wye Valley, famous Welsh border castles such as Berkeley, Raglan and Chepstow and the fantastic Welsh city of Cardiff. Finally, to the north-east lie the Cotswolds, with quaint villages and traditional market towns.

Day 4

Enjoy breakfast at Thornbury Castle and take a walk in the grounds before heading just under 2 hours north to Coombe Abbey. Coombe Abbey, originally built as a Cistercian Abbey in the 12th century, was founded in 1150 AD by Cistercian monks, then known as the Abbey of Cumbe. It has an illustrious past - dissolution by King Henry VIII, private residency to royalty, involvement in the infamous Gunpowder Plot to name but a few…! The abbey is nestled in the historical heartland of Warwickshire and is set in 500 acres of parkland, overlooking formal gardens and a tranquil lake. The abbey is well-placed for exploring historical towns such as Warwick and Stratford upon Avon (Shakespeare’s birthplace).

Day 5

Delight in a relaxing breakfast at Coombe Abbey before heading on to the next highlight of your tour: a stay at Swinton Park Castle. On the journey to the castle you may wish to stop off in the beautiful city of York and visit York Minster before continuing on to Swinton Park. Swinton Park Castle is a luxury castle hotel in the Yorkshire Dales, offering fine dining, a cookery school and extensive grounds. The Cunliffe-Lister family has owned the castle since the 1880’s, and it is the ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton. This castle offers an authentic stately home experience, with the rooms furnished with antiques and family portraits, and provides the warmth and grandeur of a traditional English house. You will not be short of things to do as the estate stretches from the River Ure in Wensleydale up onto the moorland dales and, as a guest, you can choose to take part in a whole host of country pursuits that include fishing, golf, falconry, riding and shooting. Take the time to explore the Yorkshire Dales scenery, which is outstanding. There are many popular spots within a walk or a short drive from the castle.

Day 6

Breakfast is served in Samuel’s Restaurant before departing Swinton Park to continue your castle adventure. Just a 2-hour drive from Swinton Park takes you to Langley Castle Hotel, a 14th-century castle nestled in the Northumbrian valley of the South Tyne and set in its own ten acre woodland estate. The castle was built in 1350 during the reign of Edward III and has retained its architectural integrity and is regarded as one of the few Mediaeval, fortified castle hotels in England. You will find that Langley Castle is a great base for exploring Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland countryside.

Days 7 & 8

Following a scrumptious breakfast at Langley Castle, you head off to the final city and castle of the tour, which is Melville Castle, just outside Edinburgh. Melville Castle has a country house feel. Described by guests as “History in the making”, Melville Castle truly is a beautiful landmark just on Edinburgh City Centre’s doorstep. Surrounded by luscious woodlands, guests are invited to enjoy the tranquil comfort and luxury of this historic castle including comfortable bedrooms, classic lounge and bar area, Brasserie restaurant & cellar bar. During your stay at Melville Castle head into Edinburgh - with so much to see and do, there is plenty to explore from the Royal Mile, home to the magnificent Edinburgh Castle at one end and the Palace of Holyroodhouse - the Queen’s official residence in Scotland - at the other. Visit St Giles’ Cathedral or the Scottish Parliament building. Back at the castle, finish your vacation of in style with dinner in the ancient barrel vaulted dungeon restaurant.
