Wee Castle Beauty on the West Coast of Scotland

Castle Levan was built circa 1457 and is a listed building with Historic Scotland. Incorporating 1.5m thick walls, vaulted basement bedrooms, a large fireplace, a four-poster bed...what a transformation! I remember the first time I stayed at Castle Levan many years ago, in particular the view over the water to the islands on the other side. Situated in a modern 21st century urban area, when you walk through the garden gate and down the steps, you start to feel like you are taking a step back over 500 years. As you enter the castle, you get a real feeling of warmth, with hosts who want to ensure your time with them will always be remembered.

This is a great value bed and breakfast castle, run by its new owners Kim (from the USA) and Maria. They have both put their heart and soul into the refurbishment of this hidden-away 15th-century castle.

With comments like...“Kim and Maria were so kind and friendly and we were made to feel like King and Queen for the duration of our stay”...guests will be coming back I am sure, again and again.

They cater for the discerning travellers of today. “I wasn't expecting a top-notch coffee machine in my room”...another guest commented. Attention to detail like this can be found throughout this Scottish castle accommodation.

Castle Levan is a small, unique castle-stay bed and breakfast property located just 20 miles from Glasgow International Airport on Scotland’s beautiful West Coast. If you like ghosts, this castle has one; the White Lady, said to be William Semple’s third wife, Mariota, or Marion Montgomery, daughter of John Montgomerie of Hessilhead. The castle also features hidden turnpike staircases between the rooms, arrow slit windows, parapet walkways, turrets, and original thick walls.

It may only have two guest bedchambers, each occupying its own floor of the castle, but the property can sleep up to 7 people at a time, if you all know each other, as the lower rooms share a bathroom.

Castle Levan is located just outside the sailing and ferry port town of Gourock on the Firth of Clyde, gateway to the West Coast and Isles of Scotland. The first port on the other side is Dunoon, a route I tend to travel when I have come down the West Coast, but it is an equally great entry point as well going North.

This is a great value bed and breakfast, with owners who provide first class hospitality.
