Summer in The Scottish Highlands

The Highlands are an historic region in the north-west of Scotland.

The area is very sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region, and includes the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis. Before the 19th century, the Highlands was home to a much larger population, but due to a combination of factors including the outlawing of the traditional Highland way of life following the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the infamous Highland Clearances, and mass migration to urban areas during the Industrial Revolution, the area is now one of the most sparsely populated in Europe.

The months during summer especially June, July and August are very busy up in the Highlands and are Scotland’s peak season for tourism, with the busiest period during the School summer holidays. In terms of weather, you can experience lovely sunny days, however you can’t always guarantee the weather at this time and can expect varied weather patterns, but the days are often generally mild and enjoyable, the largest advantage of this time of year is the daylight hours, with daylight reaching 10pm or beyond the further north you go.

Summer in Scotland is a time of festivals, Highland Games and stretched-out evenings; a time to make the most of the long days and the beautiful scenery by getting active in the great outdoors.

It is a great time to enjoy an activity holiday – the lochs and rivers, hills and glens, miles of coastline and secluded beaches are the perfect setting for a range of outdoor activities, such as fishing, mountain biking, walking and water sports. You can also enjoy the spectacle of traditional dancing!

The many events taking place and various festivals can have a large impact on accommodation, with many places getting booked up very early...so you need to plan ahead and book early.
